We offer a variety of opportunities for school groups of all ages. Please read our Frequently Asked Questions below.

Do you have any free opportunities for schools?

All NCW’s learning and participation programmes are externally funded and relate to specific projects targeted at certain schools/groups. Externally funded projects are of no cost to schools.  Previous examples include:

We’re lucky that we get to welcome writers from all over the world to stay here at the National Centre for Writing at Dragon Hall. Our writers in residence come from a variety of backgrounds and can stay with us for as little as one week or as long as three months. If you’d like to arrange a visit from one of our writers in residence, email learning@nationalcentreforwriting.org.uk.

How do I find out about school programmes so my school can take part?

Sign up to the young persons’ newsletter and NCW newsletter for updates on opportunities for schools. Our Learning team often emails school contacts directly with opportunities.

How do I book a writer to run a bespoke workshop in my school?

If you would like a bespoke creative writing workshop in your school NCW can send you a list of local, recommended tutors whom you can contact directly. Please email learning@nationalcenteforwriting.org.uk for this list.

How much does a bespoke workshop in my school cost?

Workshops cost £150 – 200 for a two-hour visit and workshop / £300 – 400 for a full day + travel and expenses. The fee should be agreed in advance with the tutor who will invoice the school directly.

I have a set budget which is less than the recommended fee rate, what should I do?

It is up to the tutor whether they accept the fee, some will be willing to deliver a workshop for less than the industry rate if it is for a particular school or targeted group.

I’d like to bring my class to National Centre for Writing at Dragon Hall for a workshop. Can that be arranged?

We love having schools visit Dragon Hall! If you would like to bring your class to Dragon Hall to learn about its medieval heritage and take part in a creative writing workshop in our purpose-built workshop space, please get in touch with us at learning@nationalcentreforwriting.org.uk to discuss your visit. Workshop fees apply but we will do our best to keep costs as low as possible.

My school’s budget is less than the fee, is there anything NCW can still do if we want to visit Dragon Hall?

Please get in touch with us at learning@nationalcentreforwriting.org.uk to discuss your needs and budget and we will do our best to arrange something for your school.

I’d like an author to come into my school and talk to students about writing, how do I book them?

The easiest way is to get in touch directly through their website. NCW can give some recommendations of local authors by email. You will need to pay the writer a fee and in most cases, travel expenses.
