Terry Griffiths from Hellesdon High School joined the WCN team as a Young Ambassador in 2016.
When I was in a careers lesson looking for work experience, I came across the Writers’ Centre Norwich website. Later, I emailed them to see whether this was something they offered. They replied quickly and said that they couldn’t offer work experience, but could offer the Young Ambassador experience instead! Immediately, I was interested, and ended up being accepted onto the scheme. My English teacher even said that I was very suited to participate!
The opening day was on 21 January. On my way, I was rather nervous, but also very excited! As soon as I got into the room at Writers’ Centre Norwich in Dragon Hall, I received a friendly welcome. The day went well, and we were told about various Young Ambassador activities and the fact you can do as much or as little as you wish and are able to do. These activities included reading and reviewing books for Bright Young Reads, completing a Bronze Arts Award and attending various arts events.
I have received a lot of praise for becoming a Young Ambassador
Currently I’m completing the Bronze Arts Award, which involves promoting the Young Norfolk Writing Competition, choosing ten entries to be shortlisted, and going to either the awards ceremony or another event. It also involves creating a portfolio of evidence for each of the three sections, which Becky Demmen gives a lot of guidance on, checking your portfolio to see how you’re doing and what you need to add. This will be checked by a moderator when handed in.
At school, I have received a lot of praise for becoming a Young Ambassador! I think that it’s important for more people to know of, so that everyone who wants the opportunity gets to apply. You get to meet new, interesting people, and it’s definitely a very grand feeling to be in a picture featured on the Writers’ Centre Norwich website!
