Join our writing & reading community!

Writing tends to be a solitary thing, with authors alone with their computer and notebook for weeks and months at a time. It doesn’t have to be that way, though – at least, not all the time – which is why we created a friendly, supportive community over on Discord. You can click here to join – it’s completely free.

There are dedicated areas to discuss fiction, poetry and non-fiction writing, a social space to chat about the weather and a room for the NCW Book Club. Although we have hundreds of people in the community it retains a cosy, welcoming and friendly feel. There are all sorts of writers, from complete beginners to published authors, fan-fic to literary fiction, with every genre you can think of represented. Every month we run drop-in writing sessions to help you be more productive.

Everyone is welcome, though we do have some ground rules we expect everyone to stick to:

  1. We have a zero tolerance approach to abusive or discriminatory behaviour or language of any kind;
  2. We expect all cultures and nationalities to be treated with respect;
  3. Sharing illegal material or links to illegal material is not allowed;
  4. Anti-social behaviour which disrupts the experience of other members is not tolerated.

It’s not just for writers

All writers are readers, and the community is full of people who love a good read. Even if you’re not a writer you should still jump in – our Book Club always has a book on the go (in 2020 we’ve been reading A Line Made by Walking by Sara Baume, Bluebird, Bluebird by Attica Locke and RENDANG by Will Harris) and discussion of what makes a good (or not-so-good) book is always welcome. In fact, many writers in the community are on the lookout for beta readers and useful, critical feedback – so you might even get to read pre-release material.

What is Discord?

Discord is a free community chat service, used by communities all around the world to bring people together online. You can find out more about how it works and who they are over on their website.
